• PORTO & THE NORTH

    The location

The North of Portugal has eleven courses located in fabulous natural settings, each built to take advantage of the natural surroundings and all presenting breath taking landscapes. Add the quality of the golf courses to the fabulous local gastronomy and wines, and you will easily understand that you are in for a unique and complete experience.

The city of Porto was built along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary, and its historical centre was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. It has been continuously inhabited since at least the 4th Century, when the Romans referred to it as Portus Calle.

Porto has a semi-Mediterranean climate, although it’s strongly affected by the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it cooler than other Mediterranean cities. Summers are warm and the winters mild although temperatures can drop below 0ºC.

The city has a pleasant mixture of modern and medieval architecture built into its hilly streets, there are even buildings built into the cliff face that overlook the river!!

    Porto Golf Courses

Porto has an ancient tradition in golf, having the oldest golf course in Portugal, the Oporto Golf Club founded by Charles Neville Skeffington. Although Porto and northern Portugal are not as well known for its golf courses as other regions it offers a large variety that can be played on beautiful natural terrain & locations that won’t be found anywhere else in the country, like the River Tamega, the Mountain of Marão, the majestic backdrop of the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Caramulo. You can enjoy great golf at great value and enjoy the fine climate particularly in the Summer!

To the south of Porto lies the second oldest golf club in mainland Europe – Oporto Golf Club, an 18 hole course built in 1890 by British citizens living in Porto. Situated in Espinho, there is a fabulous beach – with some of the best waves in the country – and celebrated local fish restaurants on Rua 2.

Near Póvoa do Varzim, is the Estela Golfe Club, built in 1989. This 18-hole course, designed by Duarte Sotto-Mayor, is one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in Europe. Built along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean the first class facilities of bar and restaurant serve delicious local dishes complimented by a magnificent ocean view.

Golfe de Amarante, is a wonderful course in the district of Porto. It combines a view of the Serras do Marão and Aboboreira with 18 holes of pure challenge.
